Continuous Alms
Arrived at the city by the bay and had a great cab ride with a Moroccan. “Continuous alms,” my Moroccan friend told me after hearing about Martin’sRide To Cure Cancer.  In the Muslim faith, when you do a good deed, “like putting in a well and letting others drink,” you receive continuous alms.

Even after you depart and, “Go to meet your maker,” continuous alms sends you positive points. I love this concept. It is a very “creation ritual” take on Robert Wright’s NonZero. Wright’s book is about our natural human desire to help each other, to bank continuous alms.

I rode a bicycle across America long before my Moroccan friend shared the concept of continuous alms, but it isn’t far from one of my goals. I wanted to serve something, some idea; larger than myself, larger than the cancer that was suddenly a fellow traveler. Not your turn yet, I wanted to express to the Big C. What you want will have to wait while we get this other thing done, while we bank some continuous alms.

I don’t want to sound all rattle and hum. I’m doing fine. Monthly chemo working and is keeping my white counts calm and tame. I’ve come to one of my favorite places on the planet, the city by the bay, because there are two conferences I want to attend. I start to itch if I haven't been to San Francisco on a somewhat regular basis. This trip is thankfully not on a bicycle though we flew just south of the Martin's Ride's route through Colorado, Utah and Nevada. Martin's Ride dropped into Cally at Tahoe and made our way south following mountains to the ocean.

I took these days as vacation days and am riding on my money not Jon’s or Atlantic BT’s because, as important as both these conferences are to what we are doing with predictive modeling, marketing automation and HTML5 and CSS3, I wanted to have a visit, a run down memory lane.

A visit across the bay from my monthly trips to Berkley as the Dryers Account Manager for NutraSweet, a visit to where my favorite Rauschenberg lives (at SF MoMA) and a visit with an undeniable creative spirit. In another life I live here. I live on one of these steep hills overlooking the beginning of time.

P.S. Will be live-blogging my trip and both events on ScentTrail, so stay tuned.
